An @ By Any Name

The popularity of email has prompted much research into the origin and history of the at sign. A Picking Brains HotWired article by Brenda Danet has a short list of names for the at sign and some of the history.

One of the more comprehensive articles about the at sign has been published by Herron Technical Communication. This is a plum of a page as you will see.

Another article is @ - a Sign of the Times by Karl-Erik Tallmo. This article erroneously attributes the adoption of the at sign into the computer world in 1970 to TENEX, but it was certainly in use much earlier than that.

There are many additional articles on the history and naming of the at sign.

Tom Van Vleck has written The History of Electronic Mail on Multics and its antecedents extending from pre-network times into the 1970's.
