[OpenMap Users] Spatial query of Gazeteer (dbf) using a bounding box on Map?

Dear OM User community,

I have the need to drag the mouse on the map to create a ³rubber-band box²,
sizeable rectangle, and to then query a GIS Gazeteer in .dbf (or converted
to MySQL) database to find all records of a specified F_DESIG type that fall
inside that bounding box. I am about to start from scratch on this, and
thought I would ping the community to see if anyone has any lessons learned
or examples.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
