[OpenMap Users] Low level maps of local city streets with street names?

Hello Everyone,
 
I am starting with OpenMap this week. My first task is to overlay a low
level street map into openmap.
 
Are there any available free sources of small US city and town street
maps maps with street names
available for use in OpenMap.
 
I'm new to OpenMap and have found TigerLine text files that I have
downloaded and links for "shapefiles"
that can be paid for.
 
Thanks for any hints as to what directions to take,
