There are several client/server models in OpenMap. The
com.bbn.openmap.layer.link package contains one, and the
com.bbn.openmap.layer.specialist package (in the src/corba tree) is
another. You can also pretty easily use any other Java client/server
model you like.

Seems like that kind of depends on the applet configuration and the
data being accessed, as opposed to being a general truth.
