DTED is only for elevation.

You want feature data. VMAP 0 - update to digital chart of the world. That
is just political boundaries, I believe, though political boundaries meet
water. Would a shoreline be any different? SO you can I believe you can
see lakes, but don't think rivers are part of it. There is also VMAP1,
which may have more detail. There are specs at:

And some data is available through:

http://geoengine.nima.mil

But you may not be able to access from outside the .mil domain. It'll let
you know if you can't.
