You could take a look at java Media Framework (JMF) at http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/jmf/index.jsp

I almost hesitate to recommend this. I've used it extensively for the
project that I'm working on with very mixed results. On a Windows platform
it seems to use the underlying Windows native media player and shows the
film in a native Windows window. This is outside the control of Java and
the film floats over the top of any of your Java application windows
(which can mess up your carefully crafted GUI).

It is somewhat unstable and regularly (but unpredictably) crashes when
loading a new film. Support and development from Sun is patchy at best.
Take a look in the JMF Interest archives (http://archives.java.sun.com/archives/jmf-interest.html) and you'll see the same problems cropping up over and over with many of
them going unanswered. I've posted the question about overlapping windows
several times and have never had a reasonable answer. Just "that's what we
had to do to make it work" would have saved me a lot of battering my head
against the JMF brick wall.

It obviously isn't all bad and it's the only Java based media player that
I've found so far. I did take a look at QuickTime but apparently there are
issues with using it as part of a commercial s/w product.

best regards,

Adrian
