To follow up on this thread, our project has chosen geotools-lite
(formerly geotools1) as our starting point. My message to that group is
below. As an FYI to those interested in PDA app development, our
research found that Palms are not likely to support AWT (much less
Swing) in the near future due to some basic differences in philosophy
about what a PDA OS should do. PocketPC on the other hand is already
based on a desktop OS and therefore has had an easy time supporting
AWT. By choosing CLDC 1.1 and MIDP 2.0 we are choosing to support
Palms, PocketPCs and probably smartphones, but we lose control over the
GUI.

I wanted to let the group know that a research effort here at MIT has
chosen geotools-lite as the foundation of an open source mapping
application
PDAs. We will be coding to the Java 2 Mobile Edition's CLDC 1.1 and
MIDP 2.0
APIs, and we welcome input on an architecture or coding decisions.
After our project is complete (sometime next summer), I'm hoping that
the
code could be managed by the geotools team and called something like
geotools-mobile or geotools-pda. Comments welcome.
