[OpenMap Users] Best way to create esri shape files, dbf, etc...?

I am writing some functionality into our openmap implementation that
will take geometry from the map and write it out to an esri shape file,
dbf, etc... . My question is, what is the best set of openmap classes
to accomplish the job? I have seen two different packages in the
openmap library that appear to accomplish this task:
com.bbn.openmap.layer.shape and com.bbn.openmap.dataAccess.shape.output.
Is one better than the other, and if so, why?
