I would start by getting the OpenMap application running and adding
layers to display your shape files. If you are interested in
displaying the attribute information from the dbf file accompanying the
shp file, you'll want to use the com.bbn.openmap.plugin.esri.EsriPlugIn
class.
The openmap.properties file in the package has instructions on how to
add a plugin or layer to the application by modifying the
openmap.layers property.
