The easiest thing to do to peruse DTED data is to modify the
openmap.properties file so that the jdted maker name is in the
openmap.layers property, and then modify the jdted properties to match
your system configuration. You can change the lat/lon startup point in
the properties file if you like, too.
Then, you can save the openmap.properties file in your home directory,
and run the openmap application via the startup scripts in the bin
directory.

The LOS setup is similar to the Profile tool, but you define a circular
area of interest. The tool will render an overlay on the map when it's
completed, showing green areas in the circle where there is LOS from
the center point. If you aren't getting any output, it's possible that
the center point isn't within LOS from the surrounding points. You can
try increasing the center height to check to see if the tool is
operating properly.

You do need to install Sun's Java 3D package on your system.

The JavaDocs for the layer list the properties that are needed for the
layer, and you should configure the paths to match the paths in your
DTEDLayer. The DTEDCoverageLayer simply draws rectangles on the map
showing where your DTED data is located. It does try to create a file
that makes it load faster, so your properties should reflect a coverage
file path in a place where it can be written if it doesn't exist.
