[OpenMap Users] VPF Rendring Issues?

Anyone know a good deal of VPF? I'm starting to dig in for the long
haul of understanding VPF to fix some issue I have with its rendering in
Openmap. Specifically I'd like it to render text intelligently. I
can't get anything besides coastline stuff to render. I'd also like to
figure out how to eliminate drawing objects which are silly to draw. A
pond should not be drawn when viewing the entire world :-) If anyone
has great insight into this topic I'd love it. Don has already given me
a number of pointers.
