WMS image size

Hi all,

It seems that is no possible to get WMS images from a server that is
larger than a given size. (1024 or 1280 pixels width?).
I use
WMS.wmsserver=http://www.geographynetwork.com/servlet/com.esri.wms.Esrimap
to get basemaps.

Does anyone know if there is a max size in the WMS specifications or if
this limit is given by this particular WMS server?

By the way, is there another free WMS server that can produce basemaps?
