Problems importing a map

Hi:

I am trying to import a map that I have received originally MapInfo one.
First I tried with a .shp, .shx and .dbf files, creating an EsriLayer but I
am not able to see nothing. I don't receive any kind of error. Just nothing.
I can see the map in the ArcExplorer utility but not in OpenMap.

Later I tried to import it from a MIF format and I see a blue irregular
square but not the real map. I created a MIFLayer.

Where could I have the problem? Could you help me specifying me if is there
any special way to import maps?
