layers disappear when zooming in?

Hi all,

I have seen that when I load some new layers (e.g. shape data of the
United States), and I zoom in, the new layer becomes invisible at a
certain point. They reappear when I zoom back out. I haven't been
able to find a parameter that controls this behavior, but I assume that
there is one somewhere.
