GeoTIFF?

Ok, still trying to orient myself with OpenMap and decide if I can use
if for my project, which would require a free source of custom maps.
I've found a couple of these, but they are all outputting as GeoTIFF.

I noticed on the FAQ that GeoTIFF is not supported (yet), but I was
wondering if there was a status on this, will it be supported any time
soon?
