Jar file Re-org poll

Hi All,

We're getting set up to make a 4.5.1 release that has some minor fixes
(the OMPoly doShapes problems was fixed, along with a couple of other
things). We are also going to include the SVG and J3D dependent
classes in the default jar files, just to save the aggravation of
having to compile them. You will still need to download the batik
(xml.apache.org) and j3d packages if you want to use these classes,
though.

One of the other things we're looking at doing is reorganizing how the
files are structured in the jar files. Currently, these are the jar
files that are created:

openmap.jar (2.11 Mb) - All the OpenMap classes
omcore.jar (648 Kb) - The OpenMap classes except for the layer and
plugin classes
omcontrib.jar (20 Kb) - everything in the contrib directory, for
creating GIF images.

We're considering whether to include the compiled CORBA classes in
future releases. Currently, the CORBA classes are stored in

rpfserver.jar (55 Kb) - the RPF client server stub and implementation
classes.
cspec58.jar (437 Kb)- the Specialist stub classes
specialist.jar (115 Kb) - the Specialist implementation classes
corbaimageserver.jar (20 Kb) - the corbaImage stub and implementation
classes

Again, you currently need the visibroker CORBA implementation to use
these classes.

So the reason for this email:

I'd like to reduce the number of jars that are produced, to make it
easier manage them. Seems like the omcontrib classes should be rolled
into the omcore.jar and openmap.jar, since those are so small. Seems
like all the CORBA classes should be rolled into one omcorba.jar, too.

Does anyone use omcore.jar without openmap.jar? A lot of people think
both are required, but omcore was intended to allow people independence
from particular data access implementations. Is this separation
necessary/useful? Should omcore be created from a particular target in
the makefile process (and ant) and not included in the release? If
anyone is using it because they don't need the standard OpenMap layers,
I'd prefer to leave it in.

If this matters to you, or if you have an opinion, I'd like to hear it.

Thanks,

Don
