Maps

G'day everyone!

I'm pretty new to Openmap (and even newer to the whole GIS scene), but
in a nutshell the reason I'm getting into it is because I'm starting a
program for amateur radio weather spotters and NWS to use to track
spotter locations (stationary or mobile) with virtual "pushpins" on this
map, in order to speed up the process of the organizer to find who they
need to get a report from (in other words, "who's closest to that cell
near the corner of......." Well, there's much more to it than that, but
I must say that the openmap framework and API seems VERY impressive and
useful for a project like this.

My question for the group is, where could I get free maps that are in a
format that openmap supports? Maps with roads especially and any
additional landmarks are what I'm looking for. Maybe I'm way out of
line to be looking for a "freebie" here, so let me know if that is the
case (like I said, I'm very new to GIS).

Thanks for the help and suggestions!

Cheers!
