The imageserver should be calling the renderDataForProjection method on
the Layer, which is different than the normal thread path than is called
when the layer is connected to a MapBean. It waits for the graphics to
be created, and then serially paints them into the Java graphics object
provided for the image.

What method are you calling on the ImageServer?
