RE: JDK 1.4

Good Morning,

I just converted to Java 1.4 yesterday. I haven't done any measuring yet but I haven't noticed a significant difference in speed.

I HAVE noticed a significant difference in the Windows Look and Feel and some strange "features".

() The typeface of the controls has changed to be
        a larger italic typeface. This applies to all the controls
        that I use; for example JProgressBar, JMenuBar, OpenMap's
        InformationDelegator and so on.

() Drops the final character from many strings. For example:-

        String curPos = "(RP: " + f7point3.format(rp) + ")" +
                " [Lat,Lon:" + f11point6.format(curLatLon.getLat()) + ", " +
                f11point6.format(curLatLon.getLon()) + "]" +
                "" ;

        doesn't print the closing "]"

() Many strings have odd/strange characters replacing the normal ones

I probably have other things that I haven't noticed yet. I did the change over yesterday and am still working through the re-build.

I have tried a Java L&F and that seems to get rid of some of the problems. Java 1.4 Windows L&F seems to try to pay more attention
to the Window/Properties/Appearance settings where users can customise their display colours, typefaces and so on. It doesn't get it
completely right.

Needless to say I didn't have any of these problems with Java 1.3.1-01

Hope that helps.

regards,

Adrian

Hi Don,

We're contemplating moving everything to 1.4, and wondering how OpenMap
might behave. What do you think?

Also, what is the current release number, and when are you planning for the
next release?

Jeff
