From all accounts that I've heard, OpenMap runs great on 1.4, and it
really takes advantage of the Swing overhaul that is part of 1.4.

The current release is 4.4.2, and the next release will be 4.5. I'm in
the process of trying to wrap in some cool contributions and new
functionality, and chase down some reports of weird behaviors. My new
target date is 29 March.
Included in the next release are many changes to the omGraphics
package - mainly, OMGraphics contain java.awt.Shape objects and the
com.bbn.openmap.tools.j3d package which includes a viewer (requires the
Sun j3d package). More details to come with the release, but I'm trying
really hard to get it out.
