Did you see the new entries on the FAQ page about setting up the
DTEDLayer?

What level of data are you using, and what scale of map are you trying
to display. If you are zoomed out past 1:4M, you can use level 0 data,
which is about 68k per 1 degree x 1degree file.

You could use the OMGrid object, but you'd have to write a
OMGridGenerator to display the data in the same way that the DTEDFrame
does it. I haven't had time to convert the DTEDFrame code into
OMGridGenerators, but hopefully that will be something for the future to
make this easier for other elevation data types to be rendered.
