dted or whatever

Hi all,
I would like to create a terrain-level-layer in some way. I have tried with
DTEDLayer but can not
get it to work. My application must also be 'downloadable', so the data must
not be too large as
the dted data seems to be.

Does anyone have any code snippets/dted-data that works which I can have a
look at ?

Is there any other way to create such layers ?
