We have been using DCW/Vmap vpf data in openmap with no problems. Yes it is
a very cryptic set-up trying to work out what to display.
Also, my vpf data will only display below a certain scale level. So I have
to zoom in a fair way before it will display.
Question: Has anyone been able to display point data from Digital Chart of
the World?
Is it supported by openmap?

Drew,
We have been using VPF data (VMAP) with few problems. You have to remember a
few things.
1) The vpfPath must be pointed to where OpenMap with find the dhl & lat
files
2) coverage types must be defined (bnd, hydro, pop, elev, etc). These are
subdirectory names located below the library directory (noamer, eurnasia,
etc.).
3) You must define area/edge/text feature types. They are very cryptic files
within VMAP coverage directory. I had to go into the directories to figure
these names out. A hint is that area names end with an 'a' (before the
prefix), edge names with an 'l', point names (with does appear to be
supported by OpenMap) with a 'p' and text with 'txt' (text is not very good
within VPF data). OpenMap ignores the file extension.
4) Make sure if you are using 'areas' that you specific a fill color and
opaqueness level. If not, many of these areas default to clear.
Here is a sample of my properties file using VMAP Level 0...
vmap0Political.class=com.bbn.openmap.layer.vpf.VPFLayer
vmap0Political.prettyName=VMAP0 Political
# this is on one line within the properties file.
vmap0Political.vpfPath=d:/mapdata/v0noa/vmaplv0;d:/mapdata/v0eur/vmaplv0;d:/
mapdata/v0sas/vmaplv0;d:/mapdata/v0soa/vmaplv0
vmap0Political.coverageType=bnd
vmap0Political.featureTypes=edge area
# just display coastlines and political boundaries
#vmap0Political.edge= polbndl coastl depthl
vmap0Political.edge= polbndl coastl
# just display political areas and not oceans
#vmap0Political.area= oceansea polbnda
vmap0Political.area= polbnda
# Use this property for a better focus on feature types, especially
# for more fine-grained databases
vmap0Political.searchByFeature=true
vmap0Political.lineColor=ff0000ff
vmap0Political.fillColor=ffbdde83
Hope this helps.

Subject: VPF data
All,
I've been having trouble getting the OpenMap component to display VPF data.
Specifically, the error I'm getting is that it's not finding the path to the
VPF
data directory that contains the lat or lat. file. I am, however, providing
it the
absolute path to that directory and setting up the necessary items (coverage
types,
feature types, etc.) in the properties file. Are there any special
considerations
I need to be aware of?
Drew
