OpenMap users,

I work at Cycorp Inc., a rule based artificial
intelligence research company in Austin TX. (see
www.cyc.com) We are using OpenMap in our work under
DARPA's "Command Post of the Future" project. (see
http://www-code44.spawar.navy.mil/cpof/index.html for
a somewhat out of date intro) The primary goal of the
project is "to develop the technology necessary to
create an adaptive, decision-centered, information
visualization environment for the future commander and
his immediate staff." Our part in this project is to
develop a data monitoring component to the technology
which receives incoming electronic field reports from
multiple sources (JSTARS, SIGINT, human intelligence,
situation reports, SPOT reports, etc.) and tries to
find patterns in the data which are most relevent to
situation awareness.

We use OpenMap to display various maps and overlays of
the battlespace, evaluate line of sight queries with
DTED map data, and maintain an object store of the
various geographical entities in the battlespace. Our
main need for GIS is not for display purposes, but for
geospatial analysis. We really want to use OpenMap to
access and query spatial databases (TIGER, DTED, DLG,
SDTS, etc.) and to perform a variety of standard
computational geometry algorithms. (find intersections
of polygons / polylines, construct Delaunay
triangulations of point sets, find shortest path
between two nodes in a transportation network, etc.).

My impression after using OpenMap and following this
discussion group is that it, and its users, are mostly
concerned with the display side of GIS, and not the
geospatial analysis / spatial database management
side. While our work is still very young, I hope that
we will be developing these geospatial analysis
components using OpenMap throughout the next year. It
would be very nice to find out that my impression is
incorrect and that there are already developers using
OpenMap to do more geospatial analysis / spatial
database management tasks. Mr. Zacker's note below is
encouraging.
