What everyone is doing

All,

Here is a brief description of functionality we've created to customize
OpenMap for our users. We have a java api that plugs into OpenMap.
In this api, we have created some of the following components:

We have created a 2d terrain viewer. This component allows the user to
select a beginning and end point on the map and view a 2d display
between these points. I'm sure there are many 2d terrain viewers
out there. A nice thing would be if OpenMap could design a 2d display
based on all the different implementations that are out there in the user
community. I would like to modify our viewer from an architectural
standpoint, but don't have the time.

We modified OpenMap's dted package (com.bbn.openmap.layer.dted) to display
shading based on the specified altitude value entered. For example, one may
want to view all the terrain above 15,000 ft for a location. Within this,
the user has the ability to create 'slices' based on the value entered. The

end result would be a location that is multi-colored and a legend displaying

each color and the range value for that slice.

We have also submitted numerous memory leak fixes to the OpenMap developers.
Each person uses the tool a little bit differently, and sometimes come
across
things of this nature. We also found many memory leaks in our api too.
Thanks to Don Dietrick for working this matter with me.

These are some of the bigger items. I think OpenMap is a great product, and
is ever-
evolving in the right direction. From a web perspective, I think there may
be
a need to investigate implementing an EJB-based or web services
architecture.

Thanks,

Bill
