         Yep, you can. With a bit of effort.
         Check out com.bbn.openmap.image,
         particularly the SimpleHttpImageServer
         and the ImageFormatter classes.
         You could probably use the SimpleHttpImageServer out of the box,
         although you'd probably have to write your own
         ImageFormatter to produce PNG images.
