Sounds like you need an EditableOMText object, which would let you
create and edit OMText objects over the map. I haven't written one yet.

The OMText object lets you put text on the map from a layer.

Well, it would be easier to keep track of all of your temperatures in a
JTable in your palette, and then update the text on the map's OMText
objects programmatically from the table. You could track mouse
movements in the layer to move the OMText locations.
