Don,
  I recently experienced similar problems zooming in to max resolution, about
1:5000. I was using jdk1.3.1_01 from Sun. I also run Sun's jdk1_4_0-beta3. I re-ran
the same display with jdk1.4 and zoom all the way down to 1:5,000 works noticeably
faster.
