How to Control Pan & zoom ?

Hi all,

I know that its silly to ask silly questions when important discussions are
on.
I am a _novice_ trying to tame the OpenMap. I have a city map of a small
area. With regard to this, please help me:

I cant center the map area on the screen using the pan buttons. I think this
is because the pan amount is large. How can I control that. same is the
case with Zoom also.
