Hi Dave,
You probably should start with the OpenMap user documentation, available
on the http://openmap.bbn.com to get familiar with runnning the OpenMap
application. There is also some developer documentation available on
the website, too, that would be good to read in order to see how OpenMap
layers work: http://openmap.bbn.com/develper_hints.html and
http://openmap.bbn.com/doc/openmap-arch.html, to see what's involved in
writing layers or plugins.
After you figure out how to interface with the GPS unit programmatically
with Java, the rest is a piece of cake. I'd recommend writing a
com.bbn.openmap.plugin.PlugIn that interfaces with the GPS.
