Projection for displaying simple 3D graphics

Hi,

I'm thinking about adding things like 3D coverage domes from radars or conical coverage from satellites but because the orthographic projection is always centered pointing to the centre of the earth, I can't see the horizon unless I zoom right out - but then I lose the detail.

Has anyone written a projection class that allows the earth to be moved around so that you can change the camera view from being vertically down to having some other angle, say 45 degrees.

I think this would be a great benefit to the OpenMap community as it would allow users to display data with altitudes rather than being data that is drawn on the surface of the earth. I guess classes such as OMPoint would have to be subclassed to something like OMPoint3D to include altitude.

This could lead to having DTED data displayed in 3D on the map as well. It wouldn't require too much processing because it wouldn't have to be a real-time display - though if someone wanted to there's no reason why not - look at JCanyon using the java.nio package at http://java.sun.com/products/jfc/tsc/articles/jcanyon/.

I would be very interested to hear whether anyone has already done this or not ot other peoples views on the way to approach the problem and possible solutions.

Many thanks,

Dave
