John (and others),

WMS is the Web Mapping Service as specified by the OpenGIS Consortium (
http://www.opengis.org/ ). It is the standard which grew out of an
interoperability initiative called Web Mapping Testbed (WMT) a couple of
years ago.

A WMS server provides maps (usually in some image format) over HTTP in
response to requests on URLs with particular parameters.

The full specification is available at
http://www.opengis.org/techno/specs/00-028.pdf

Sorry I didn't expand the acronym in my original mail.
